Rotation/Rolling in Freeform Swim and Vehicles

I'm pretty new to the game, I bought it last week and have put maybe 25 hours in. It's fantastic, but I wish I could roll around in the water. By this I mean, why can't I use Q and E (or some other mechanic) to roll left or right? Like a free mode camera that can roll 360° in any direction. I thought about rolling around too much, disorienting myself, losing direction and thinking up was down, but the spacebar can still be an auto "swim to surface" button. I feel this would add more immersion to the game also, simulating the feeling that you're actually suspended in the ocean and able to move and roll freely in any direction. It might also help with navigation in tight spaces like inside wrecked ships. Just an idea, and as of now the only thing I could recommend for the game. Like I said, wonderful otherwise.

OMG... Reaper moved in next door.

Ok so I built my first base to prepare to get on to the alien buildings so much grinding and building crafts and such.
Started hearing roaring now and then and it didn't click till late night in the shallows (106M away from start pod) I crack open a limestone and turn around to head towards the next deposit on my head and see a smiling face...
ykylq1lv5p4z.jpg

Earlier I was looking for metal scraps near the wreck and I had a reaper go to bite me so I used my electric pulse thing on my seamoth to drive it off.
Little did I know it ran pretty far and towards my base. Looks like the reapers don't have a leash.
So a little warning for others and a annoying neighbor for me to deal with lol.

Official Player Name?

Is there anything official that we can use to refer to the player character? It doesn't need to be an actual name, something like what Fallout does with the Sole Survivor, or Skyrim with the Last Dragonborn, or Dark Souls with the Chosen Undead would all be adequate as well. I just need something to refer to them as. It's not something that needs to be immediate, but it is bothering me a fair bit.

PSA: Anyone who has had crashes, that would like to share their saved game with the devs, READ:

>>>BONUS!<</span><</span><</span> See the end of this post for tips on how to make your crash report & saved game logs even more useful to the devs by including relevant information with your submission!

The devs want your save game folder, to try and figure out what's causing this. [EDIT: some clarification. The devs want this info when the game is in its crashing state, so, if you've fixed the issue, and you have the old crash causing cache files backed up, temporarily undo that, get the crash, and then follow this guide, so that they can see what the problem is. They won't be helped by a freshly cache cleaned save, with a log file showing no problems. ;) ]

EDIT2: Anyone who has safety concerns (for a saved game folder?? well I suppose anything is possible) can, instead of posting the link to their saved game folder here, send it to subnautica-support@unknownworlds.com of course. I don't think anything could happen with a saved game folder, but if you're not sure, by all means, use the private e-mail option if it makes you more comfortable.

I've put together a guide, with pictures in case anyone needs them. The straightforward guide is at the beginning, if you need a bit of hand-holding, read the rest of the post and I'll go through it step-by-step.
EDIT#??, read this section if you really just want to know what needs to be send and where to find it:

This guide is too difficult with all those "open this folder, drag that folder, move that folder". Can you just say which folders/files beside the SaveGames should I provide?

1. Your Subnautica\SNAppData\SavedGames\slot00xx folder
2. Your Subnautica\YYYY-MM-DD_HHMMSS folder, if it/they exist
3. Your Subnautica\Subnautica_Data\output_log.txt file
4. Your dxdiag output saved to dxdiag.txt or similar ("Save All Information" by the exit button on the lower right)
5. Compress all of that ▲ using 7zip, WinRAR, WinZip, or Windows, just remember, efficiency-wise, it's 7z > rar > zip
6. Upload the archive somewhere and post a sharing link to it

Before we start, download and install 7-zip, as we'll be using it in this guide. If you need help doing that, watch this video (you should download the 64-bit version).

Open up all three of these locations, found in \steamapps\common:
  • Subnautica
  • Subnautica\SNAppData\SavedGames
  • Subnautica\Subnautica_Data
  • Right-click slot000x folder in Subnautica\SNAppData\SavedGames > 7-zip > add to slot000x.7z
  • Copy (CTRL-drag) your crash folder from Subnautica\ to SNAppData\SavedGames
  • Copy your output_log.txt file from Subnautica\Subnautica_Data to \SNAppData\SavedGames

Leave SavedGames open, close the other two. You may want to add SavedGames to QuickAccess (button at upper left) or Favorites (right-click Favorites, click add current location).

Open dxdiag, click save all information, save dxdiag.txt to SavedGames

Double-click on the slot000x.7z file in SavedGames to open it in 7-zip.

In SavedGames, drag
  • crash folder
  • output_log.txt
  • DxDiag.txt
down to the 7-zip icon on the taskbar, wait for 7-zip to come up, and then continue dragging up and into the 7-zip window, to add those files to slot000x.7z

Open Google Drive* and upload your slot000x.7z

Right-click the uploaded file, click 'Get shareable link', and paste that link (automatically copied to clipboard) into your post here.

-- delete the crash folder, output_log.txt, and slot000x.7z file from SavedGames

* Of course you can use whichever file hosting service you prefer

Now, if you needed more help:

1. Right-click Subnautica in Steam, click 'Properties', then click the 'Local Files' tab. Then click the 'Browse Local Files...' button. Move the 'Subnautica' folder that opens to the upper left of your screen.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpOQW5HMjNZT0twUTA

2. In the 'Subnautica' folder, right-click 'Subnautica_Data' and click 'Open in new window' >> Move the new 'Subnautica_Data' folder below the 'Subnautica' window.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpORWFfYkppQkdVQmc

3. In the 'Subnautica' folder, right-click 'SNAppData' and click 'Open in new window' >> Move the new 'SNAppData' folder to the right of the 'Subnautica' folder.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpOeTlTS2E0NXZqVXc

4. In the 'SNAppData' folder (upper right), double-click the 'SavedGames' folder to open 'SavedGames' in the 'SNAppData' window. 'SNAppData' is now 'SavedGames'.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpObmcyZHBOUUtvT0U

5. In the 'SavedGames' folder (upper right), right-click on the saved game slot folder you want to send, and go down to '7-zip >', and click 'Add to "slot000x.7z". (Not sure which folder has your save? Look at the modified dates / times, or peek inside the folder at the 'screenshot.jpg' file.) Wait for 7-zip to compress the folder for you, resulting in a 'slot000x.7z' file.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpOZjRMN0ZVc0prRGs

6. In the 'Subnautica' folder (upper left), hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard, and click and drag the crash folder (labeled by the date and time of your crash, like 2016-10-19_221554) from the 'Subnautica' folder (upper left), to the 'SavedGames' folder (upper right). This copies the crash folder to the 'SavedGames' folder, we'll use this later.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpObWxOVGRCV3dZX28

7. In the 'Subnautica_Data' folder (lower left), scroll and find the output_log.txt file. Hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard, and click and drag the output_log.txt file to the 'SavedGames' folder (upper right). This copies output_log.txt to 'SavedGames', again, for later use.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpOekQ2eWY2WktYYms

8. In the 'SavedGames' folder (upper right), click the "Pin to Quick Access" button on the upper left of the window. If you aren't on Windows 10, then find and right-click on the 'Favorites' in the left pane, and click 'Add current location to Favorites'.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpOOXRuQlpTZG5VWnM

9. Click the Start menu, type dxdiag and press enter or click the dxdiag result at the top of the list. Wait for dxdiag to finish (green bar to fill and disappear, if you don't see it, it's done), then click the 'Save all information' button at the bottom. In the Save As box, find 'SavedGames' under QuickAccess or Favorites, and click it to go to the 'SavedGames' folder location. Then click the 'Save' button, to save DxDiag.txt to the 'SavedGames' folder. You can now close the dxdiag (DirectX Diagnostic Tool) program.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpOYUloOFE5QTI0WjQ

10. In the 'SavedGames' folder (upper right), click the 'Maximise' button in the upper right of the window (box button, next to the 'X' / 'Close' button) -- this makes 'SavedGames' fill the screen.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpOcFRzYlVQYmVHQjg

11. In the 'SavedGames' folder (whole screen), double-click on the slot000x.7z file to open it in 7-zip.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpONXhnemdmMDhjS2c

11a. In the 'SavedGames' folder (whole screen), individually drag each one of:
  • the crash folder (eg, 2016-10-19_221554)
  • DxDiag.txt
  • output_log.txt
to the 7-zip icon in the Taskbar, and then, once 7-zip pops back up, drag them into the slot000x.7z 7-zip window, which will copy them into it.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpOalNQV3FEckpfSnM

12. In your browser, go to drive.google.com. Click 'NEW', then click 'File upload'. In the 'Open' box, find 'SavedGames' in the QuickAccess or Favorites on the left pane, and click it to open that location. Then, click the slot000x.7z file, and click the 'Open' button. Wait for the file to upload.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpOaklWNzVyTWpGN00

13. After the file upload completes, you will see 'slot000x.7z' in your Google Drive. Right-click it, and click 'Get shareable link'. A box will open up containing a sharing link, which will allow anyone you give the link to access to that file. It is also automatically copied into your clipboard. In the Subnautica Bug Reporting thread, right-click and choose 'Paste' to copy the link into your post.
uc?export=download&id=0B0W8iwdwhDpOMTQwUzZRQWthTDQ

That's it! Now, delete these files in the 'SavedGames' folder:
  • the crash folder (eg, 2016-10-19_221554)
  • output_log.txt
  • the slot000x.7z file
--You might want to keep the DxDiag.txt file, as if you upload another saved game, that file is the same, and you don't have to run dxdiag again, you can just re-use that one.

Any clarifications, corrections, etc, just post below and I'll edit the OP. :)

Splash Down (A Subnautica Story)

Some of you who have seen some of my very lengthy posts on this forum may have rightly come to the conclusion that I enjoy writing and I do! I particularly love creative story writing. This post is going to be the first chapter of hopefully many chapters in a novilization of Subnautica's story line. Basically, I'll be taking the elements of Subnautica's story, and weave them all together into something like a book giving the character you play as his own personality. Now, because the character you play as in Subnautica doesn't have an official name, I will be giving him one myself. Let's see... his name will be... Jeff? Yes, Jeffery Masterson. Alright, let's begin!

Splash Down - A Subnautica Story

Chapter 1: Sit back and Relax

The Aurora was a sight to behold. It was the newest ship the Alterra Corporation had rolled out of the space dock. The space dock was a massive space station orbiting Earth designed to provide the space to build massive interplanetary vessels of all shapes and sizes. It also acted as a massive air-port with many commercial ships available for boarding. The Aurora, however, was off limits to commercial travelers. She was built for a special mission to the outer reaches of explored space. She wasn't the biggest ship docked today, but she was capable of carrying around 7,000 crew with a massive cargo space. Jeffery Masterson was sitting in the thousands of rows of blue chairs in the waiting area of the space dock's airport section. He sat reading on his PDA with nothing more than a backpack and a duffel bag at his side. He glanced up through the massive observation glass out at the Aurora. At that moment, a robotic voice echoed through the intercom system over the hustle and bustle of the airport.

"Alterra specialized craft Aurora now boarding. Please proceed to the Specialized Launch section and provide your Alterra IDs."

Jeff slid his personal PDA in his backpack, grabbed his duffel bag, and headed off on the long walk toward the corner of the boarding section dodging travelers that were walking to and fro. A hollow panel on the ceiling read, 'Specialized Launch'. Jeff approached the security check and was thankful to be one of the first few people in the line. After the person in front of him went through, Jeff came up to the scanner array.

"ID." A security officer said with a sigh. "Put your things in the luggage scanner and please step into the array."

Jeff handed him his ID. This ID identified him as an Alterra employee and authorized him for this special mission. Not your typical passport ID that most commercial travelers have. He deposited his luggage onto the hover belt that slowly moved his bags through a scanner. Then, he stepped into the large scanner array. The thing looked much like a door frame with a shiny black interior and white exterior. A blue light flashed on from the top and aimed a blue laser scanner down at Jeff. Instantly a green checkmark appeared on a monitor sticking out from the side of the frame.

"You're cleared. Next." The security officer barely let his words leave his mouth before saying 'next'.

Jeff grabbed his hovering luggage from the hover belt and continued on to to a door that lead to a horizontal elevator that would take him to the boarding tower that was attached to the Aurora and held it in place. Jeff stepped onto the massive platform that was the elevator and once enough people had gotten on, it automatically began zooming down a large glass corridor. Jeff got a really good view of the entire space dock. He had never really seen the immensity of the station since he hadn't traveled much except the few times he went with his family on vacations to Mars when he was too young to remember.

Jeff let out a low whistle as he observed the massive line of various ships all docked to the side of the station's exterior forward deck.

Before Jeff had fully taken in the view, a dark shadow came over the glass corridor. He turned around to see the Aurora in all its glory as the sun became blotted out by it. The ship was much bigger up close than he had initially imagined when viewing it from the waiting area. The elevator slowed to a stop and everyone began stepping off the elevator into the boarding tower's main room. Here, several corridors went directly from this room into the Aurora's boarding bay. Above each corridor was a label that identified a class. 'Engineer', 'Pilot', 'Administrative', 'Medical', 'Communications', etc. Jeff was a simple engineer who specialized in PRAWN suit maintenance. He had always wan'ted to pilot one of those things, but all he got to do was repair them which Jeff still enjoyed as much as a hovercar referbisher would enjoy fixing up old hovercars. He stepped into the corridor labeled 'Engineer' and walked down the long hallway until he came into what looked like a large cargo bay where there seemed to be crew members directing people to their assignments. As a group of people went off to the left, Jeff saw a crew member appear out from behind them.

"Engineer?" He said simply.

"Yeah, PRAWN maintenance and repair." Jeff replied.

"ID please."

Jeff used his free hand to retrieve his Alterra passport from his pocket and gave it to the man.

"Alright..." The man looked at the ID, glanced down at a PDA, and scrolled down a list. "Alright Jeffery Masterson, PRAWN personnel are to report to deck 5, Living Quarters branch 17. Head off to your left and follow the signs. Your room number is 119. Place your ID's bar-code up to the scanner to unlock the door. If you get lost, just find a computer terminal and pull up a map of the ship."

"Alright, thanks." Jeff said. The crewman simply looked past him to the next personnel coming in behind him.

Jeff headed off to the left where at the end of the cargo bay was a door that lead into a hallway. Once he reached the door, he saw an elevator at the end of the hall and quickly made his way toward the people piling into it. The doors shut behind him and a woman closest to the elevator's terminal began punching in numbers and asking people what deck they were going to.

"And you?" she asked Jeff.

"Deck five." he said.

After a bit more asking around, she finally entered all the decks everyone would be going to and the elevator starting going up. After several stops, Jeff finally came to deck five and exited the elevator into another set of hallways. A sign on the wall directed him to his left for Living Quarters. He made his way down several long hallways occasionally passing by a crew member that seemed quite enveloped in their work.

"Hey does anyone know why my Crew PDA is using the Vanilla 1.0 OS?" A crewmember called behind Jeff as he passed by him.

A reply came from some where down the hall behind him. "You musta been issued an older PDA, Thomas. Relax, its only one version older. I hear 1.1 isn't much different anyway."

Eventually Jeff came to the Living Quarters hallway and he started counting down the door numbers. "123, 122, 121, 120, Ah, here's 119."

Jeff took out his ID and placed it in front of the wall scanner and after a split second, the door unlocked and an automated voice chimed, "Welcome aboard."

The interior was very meager. A shelf, a bed, some wall lockers and a chair with a small shelf sticking out of the wall next to it that Jeff assumed was a table. He dropped his things and picked up a PDA that was sitting on his bed. As he turned it on, a loading screen appeared and an automated voice came over the tiny speaker in the handle of the PDA.

"Welcome to the Aurora personnel 119. This PDA will serve as your work PDA. DO NOT mistake it for your personal PDA. This device will only be used for work. According to launch schedule, you are not required of anything at this moment. Please standby for bridge orders. In the meantime, make yourself at home! Alterra Corp. hopes you enjoy your time here."

Jeff plopped down onto his bed and spoke to the PDA. "Work schedule and mission length?"

The AI replied. "2,941 hours of work time estimated to be in your schedule and flight is estimated to take a maximum of 2 to 3 years."

Jeff let out a long sigh. "I better relax while I have the chance."

End Chapter 1

I hope you guys enjoyed! Don't worry, things are going to get a whole lot more interesting!

In VR can't enter hatches or vehicles without losing controls Build: 2352871

So I've run into a weird problem that i've confirmed I don't see when playing in non-VR mode. In VR, when i enter the seamoth or try to use a hatch in the habitat, the controls freeze. What i mean is that instead of entering the seamoth or entering the hatch, the character sits there, like it's waiting for an animation to start, and I can't move, open a menu, nothing. This seems to happen on both a keyboard and gamepad. I end up having to close the game by ending the process in task manager.

I tried opening the game in regular mode (non-VR) and it worked fine. I entered and exiting the seamoth several times while moving through hatches into and out of the habitat with no problem. It makes VR unplayable as the game still runs. I ran out of oxygen and died while this was happening because I couldn't enter the habitat.

So... Subnautica is launching what's next?

Request. As per title.

It's great that the game is finished and I'm enjoying it, but it seems like there's crazed murder fish nearly everywhere I'd like to build a base. I have fond memories of when the Bulb zone was otherwise named and devoid of fauna. A peaceful place of big fluffy balls. Bliss. Now it's full of bitey sharks and sizzle worms. I can also remember back to when we had the current generator which could provide some defense.

I'd love to be able to make some version of these.

http://subnautica.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_Deterrent

Not only would they broaden our options for base locations but they'd throw another constant power consumer into the mix.

So, the game is finaly out and I've been enjoying the game alot !

However...

Just to add a bit more of clarification: The orange dot in the ground is what is left of my seamoth stuck in the floor in the
Island with the orbital gun thing.
(foot for scale).

Yeah..thats still happening.

I mean, it was fun in the last 10 times it happend (specialy the times I would get ported below the map into the endless abyss) EDIT: That was back
in E.A
but right now I'm feeling rather disapointed and frustrated with this. Is there a Fix where I won't have to deal with this shit without having to use console commands and get my achivements blocked ?

I don't want to sound too much as a sarcastic prick as I do understand the game just recently launched, but given the time the it has been in development it boogles my mind this is still a thing and losing 6 hours of progress just because of this problem ain't no fun at all guys.

That said though I'm still enjoying Subnautica, I think it has a great idea and it's been fun to fight my fears of deep water. Here's hoping this get resolved soon.

For how long were we passed out? [spoilers?] Thread derailed, please close

This contains some information that technically counts as a spoiler, but since all of this is info you get very early on it isn't anything major. Thought it would be best to warn anyways.

So, when the game begins, we are knocked out by a metal panel flying around in the lifepod. When we wake up, the pod is filled with flames you have to put out. You can't have been unconscious for very long, as the fire would've either spread to the entire pod or sucked all the air out. Either way, you'd be dead. However, later we find out that everyone else is dead, but they didn't die right off. Instead, they survive for a while, dying one by one. So it seems like we've been passed out both for less than ten minutes and several hours if not days or even weeks at the same time. How is this possible?

I've been wondering this for a long time now, and any explanations I've come up with have been unsuitable.
Were we just the last one to abandon ship?
Possibly, but it is unlikely the difference between the launches would've been sufficient as everyone abandoned the ship more or less at the same time
Because the ship was shot down, it came down pretty quickly and there was no reason to abandon before getting shot

Was everyone alive at the same time, just not finding each other and we only picked up their signals once they died?

Negative. You can find any of the other lifepods right after you wake up, but they are all already destroyed. Besides, why would we pick up their signals only as they die?

Any other explanations?
