A Subnautica story by Scifiwriterguy

Chapter 1, Part I

Hollister, Michael P.
Employee No. J-H8261827
Space Operations Division
Current Assignment: Captain, ASV Aurora

"Captain on deck!"

"As you were," Hollister says, walking briskly across the open-floorplan bridge. He notes that none of the crew manning stations had moved to get up on his entrance; if they had, it would've been a disciplinary note, no matter how much of a hurry he's in. Watchstanders have more to concentrate on than jumping to their feet every time someone with brass on his neck walks through the door, even if people like that pedantic pissant Yu didn't understand why.

In the center of the bridge, with a commanding view of both the local-sensor holo map in the lower-forward position and the viewpanels dominating the walls, his on-duty pilot team was working with uncommon speed. During the average cruise, pilots only have real work to do at departure and arrival, with a long stretch of nothing mid-flight.

Of course, this isn't an average cruise, he reflects.

Hollister makes for his navigator, Hideki Ishimura. Only a year out of Fleet training, but still one of Alterra's top interstellar navigators. That's why he's sitting on the bridge of the Aurora and not in some cushy job in Alterra Central back in Gilese.

"Ishi? What's the news, son?" Hollister asks as he approaches the nav station. Hideki doesn't look up.

"Approach to 4546B is currently nominal, sir. We're beginning the roll and pitch to orient for the maneuver." Outside, the luminous crescent of 4546B's sunlit side is rotating slowly counterclockwise as the Aurora spins on her long axis to point her belly at the planet.

"How long to gravity interface?"

Hideki glances at one of his wing monitors before answering.

"We'll be at the correct boost angle in two minutes, fifteen seconds...mark." In addition to rolling, Aurora is also yaw-thrusting, pointing her nose to skim the planet. When the right angle comes up, the pilots hit the main engines and shove the ship forward so that the massive ship rolls around the planet's gravity well, shifting her onto a new course for the next leg of her journey; at the moment, the ship is still in its original plotted vector, aimed at the planet rather than alongside it.

"Good," Hollister says before walking away. Despite the relative difficulty of the upcoming maneuver, navigation isn't his main concern. Instead, he heads for a nearby instrument cluster staffed by three crew.

"Any contacts?" Hollister asks the trio as he steps up to them.

"Sir, currently holding no contacts of any kind," the senior sensor technician, some overeager pup named Reenberg, replies.

"Nothing in our transit path?"

"No sir, no contacts or reflections."

"Scanning the planet?"

"Yes, sir, full-spectrum. Sensor efficiency is degraded but I don't have any firm contacts."

"Degraded?"

"Yes, sir. 4546B seems to be a waterworld, and the water scatter is throwing off the fine targeting. Astrogation should be notified; they have the planet marked as partly terrestrial."

"Fine, notify them. After the maneuver. In the meantime, all three of you keep up active scanning on the planet and the orbital path, and you let me know if you detect anything."

"Yes, sir."

Straightening, Hollister looks through the viewpanels. The glowing, sunlit atmosphere of 4546B has rotated about halfway down the panels. Despite being mostly cargo space and blessed with some of the most powerful thrusters ever to come out of an engine lab, a ship as big as the Aurora can't maneuver very quickly; that much mass resists changes in its inertia.

"Optimal boost angle in one minute twenty...mark," Ishi's voice announces to the bridge from its cluster of displays.

"Very good," Hollister says to nobody in particular. He's getting worried now. To everybody else on the bridge, this is a semi-ordinary maneuver which he's decided to make more interesting by being a busybody and bothering the sensor team. But the sealed orders the command crew received just before departure make this another matter entirely, and one which isn't panning out correctly.

Sensors should see something by now.

"What's that?"

Hollister spins on his heel, bulling his way to the sensor station.

"What?"

"Not sure, sir," Reenberg says, "Energy signature below, from the planet. Can't quite figure it out."

"Explain! Don't make me keep asking."

"It's a powerful signal, sir, but we can't localize it. It's a weird signature. I haven't seen anything like it before."

"Amplitude increasing exponentially," one of the subordinate techs says.

"Optimal angle in one minute...mark," Ishi says from halfway across the bridge.

"Power spike! It's going off the chart, sir!" the junior tech yells. Reenberg seems frozen.

Hollister's wrist flies toward his face, the bandmic keying automatically to the ship's 1MC announcement circuit.

"XO to the bridge on the double!" he shouts, his voice echoing in every corner of the ship's crew spaces.

"Sir!" the sensor tech screams. His gear has passed through the top of its range and is now showing Signal Off warnings - the energy reading below has exceeded the system's ability to understand.

"Sound collision!" Hollister yells to the bridge crew, and moments later the sound no spacer wants to hear begins: the rising-and-falling wail of the collision alarm. The one veteran spacers call "Death's Alarm Clock."

"Incoming!" The warning comes from the third-rate sensor tech, the one scanning in optical/IR. Although she can't make out what her telescopes are showing, it's bright, getting brighter, and unmistakably headed for her.

"Brace for impact!" Hollister screams over the 1MC.

Hmmm, I've played this game 6 times and I'm lost.

It feels some biome configuration has changed of late. I had a very neat spot for a base and I can't find it anymore.

It was on the border of Shallows, Kelp and Grassy plateau. I had the grand reef trench not far on the left (maybe 500m) and the entrance of the shroom cave at 200m right (the one with the 3 holes.

Does this entrance have been removed ?

Did you noticed some biome modifications ?

Cyclops Battery and Powercell Chargers now use power at a 1:1 ratio on Experimental Build

Saw this on the Subnautica subreddit. Battery and Power cell chargers now use power at a 1:1 ratio

There's no longer a power efficiency in charging Batteries and Powercells on the Cyclops to effectively give infinite power.

I just set out for my run to the Aurora in the Cyclops from my 4-Biome Base and confirmed this while stopped. Currently Experimental build May-2017 48390.

So we're going to need spare Powercells on the Cyclops. Powercell Chargers in Bases. And it's kind of pointless to put Powercell Chargers on the Cyclops as it just moves charge between Powercells. Maybe 1 to shift charge and a Battery Charger to charge Batteries, although it's better to charge Batteries with the Swim Charge Fins.

EDIT: Here's a post from reddit reporting the measured power consumption of the current Experimental Cyclops.

[ BUG ] Windows10 new install - no sound, freezes in pause menu

I played Subnautica about a year ago on a Windows 7 pc with only minor problems. Yesterday I downloaded a fresh install of the game on a newer build Win10 PC, with Nvidia 1080ti, an intel I7 cpu, and 16 gb ram, excited to return to the game and see all of the changes and improvements. When I open Subnautica, there is no sound at all on either the opening menu, the black screen "intro", or after I hold the escape key to enter the game. I spawn in the pod, still with no sound. I can interact with items, I can open the hatch and enter the water, etc. I entered the pause menu via escape key, try to exit the game, or save, or anything at all and nothing happens. It's locked. I have to shut the game down via task manager. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the game, and all drivers including video and sound are up to date. I have tried running the game in compatibility mode for both Win 7 and 8, with the same result. My game build is Dec-2017 57474. I appreciate any other advice or recommendations anyone has to help me get back into this fun game!

Subnautica Idea's (Feel free to post your ideas!)

Hello Subnautica, I understand that it can take time, months or even longer to create large detailed structures but I do have some ideas so please hear me out! OK so to get started I think that we can all say that the submarines in the game are awesome! Others may not be so fond of them but to my perspective (and others) I think I can figure out that we would like some more vehicles, even though we have the Cyclops, Seamoth, and the Prawn Suit; but what if there were more vehicles, one's a little more interesting! So at this point I believe that you have heard of the 3 concept art submarines with the names being Manta, Draconis, and Shark <---(Not Official), so here is where this get's interesting so as you know we have the Cyclops which is not exactly made for the conditions of the Lava Biome, so since the Draconis is a very armored submarine it could serve some purpose there or even for encountering other powerful creatures such as the Sea Dragon, Sea Emperor, and even the Reaper Leviathan. http://i.imgur.com/iCszsQs.png <--- (Draconis Image Link)

Next up we have the Manta! Now if you look at the image the size looks Massive!; but in fact that is still not the biggest submarine that I am covering but we will get to that eventually! So the Manta is a very big submarine and in my perspective couldn't really be used as a usable exploring submarine, instead it could be used as a sub-base (Submarine Base), I say this because it has very large expanding sides which looks as if it could provide enough for 4 people considering that the living space is almost like a rounded out square. Now this would be a great submarine for those that can't build a base at certain depth and there main base (or other bases) are too far away so the manta could be used for an emergency base that would be big enough to provide enough living space to provide a Bedroom, Food supply room (Fish tanks and ETC), Storage room, and even possibly a room to be used for constructing! I believe that this would be a great idea since we can't always build a base but to my perspective the Manta still looks to be big enough to house the Cyclops with the Cyclops housing the Seamoth or Prawn Suit! http://i.imgur.com/S4gWnYo.png <--- (Manta Image Link)

For the third and final of my suggestions we have the one and only submarine, Shark! Now this submarine for sure looks capable enough to house the Draconis housing the Cyclops housing either the Seamoth or Prawn Suit (assuming the Draconis can house the Cyclops)! Now the shark would be great because even though if the other two submarines were to be implemented, they would still not be foreseeable to withstand the Sea Emperor. However Assuming that the Manta or Draconis can withhold the Sea Emperor it would still be a very nice submarine to have considering that you could be the king of the sea. Along with the implantation these submarines could be new technology to make them! Also another thing the Shark would be great for those who want to explore the Subnautica in deep depths that the Seamoth and Prawn Suit somehow would not be able to handle. Even though that the Shark is the biggest submarine by far it would be great for fending of those fierce Reaper Leviathans! The Shark would also be a great way to explore the depths of the Aurora or even Pre Cursor locations! Finally along with the Sharks Enormous size it could be used as a base just like the Manta except more practical for moving to locations. http://i.imgur.com/6O9Lze6.png <--- (Shark Image Link)

Anyways thanks for reading this Subnautica and I hope that you can take these submarines into consideration and possibly think of implementing them into the PC game whenever possible! I believe that it would an amazing improvement and update if these submarines were to be implemented into the game! Anyway's until then I will be watching closely for more updates to subnautica (PC)! Thank's. P.S. If you could, please send me details of any info that you think of these submarines!

Crystaline Sulfur

Has something happened to sulfur or is there a bug ? I build a seabase near the giant covetree in lostriver and I have usually found sulfur there. I was on a move with seamoth, so, I dived further down in the lavazone but didn't find sulfur and no kyanite in sight. I performed more extensive search of lostriver, still no sulfur. I don't really like taking the PRAWN down there without jump-jets. Might be worth of a shot the drill the byro-chorals but that's probably not the thing

So the launch pad is in the game but why when I build it on the mobile vehicle bay, it doesn't build? It just freezes for a couple seconds and then nothing happens.

So, I was wondering, when you guys get a bit of an idea as to when Subnautica will be coming for the ps4, you should have create a ps4 theme to help advertise it and to, well, have an awesome Subnautica theme for the ps4 home screen. And if it ends up happening that Subnautica doesn't come to PS4, then people with that system can still experience part of the wonders of 4546b.

Welcome ladies and gentlemen... Lentlemen if you please... to the release of ns2_unearthed (aka ultimate ns2_trash version 2.0 competitive...delux...you'll get a black marine skin I promise...Nah you won't only kidding edition!)

So, if you're unfamiliar with ns2_trash, first of all SHAME ON YOU!, but also, you can find the original map here - https://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/145621/ns2-trash/p1

ns2_trash itself is a "nicely" balanced, if pretty bland/ugly map that I built (therefore am aloud to call it ugly as hell... you're not! :P)
I worked "long" and "hard" on creating said map and am very happy with the outcome, I wanted a little more, but I didn't want to ruin what I already had... soooo

DUN DADA DAAAAAHHHHH!

Here is ns2_unearthed, its ns2_trash... but not.
I'm rebuilding areas (yet again with the help of my beautiful assistant @Mephilles) based almost solely off of the feedback from @herakl3s and other high skill competitive players.

You can expect to see potential layout changes, detail changes, room changes and all in all... well... "changes" that hopefully make the map more balanced for 6 vs 6 play.

Workshop link - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1162834732 (mod id in the comments)

That's right Lentlemen, you buy one, you get one free, you sub to ns2_trash, you get ns2_unearthed absolutely free... whether you want it or not! (this temporary offer is now over!)

SO, COME ON DOWN AND Tell your server admins to set up their servers to run both trash and unearthed because if they don't... THEY'RE SCUM!!! (note: server admins that do not run this mod are not scum)

Please for the love of god, leave feedback and join the Spark Crafter Collective for Testing purposes every Sunday @21:00 CEST/CET.

Enjoy the map, and keep an eye out here for future updates!

Feeling Pretty Bummed...

Can anyone explain why the decision was made to try and release this game on Xbox?

The more I've been thinking about it, the more I've realized that many of the features that users yearned for were either cut or never developed simply because they wanted to be able to cram this game into the pitiful box that the lackluster platform supports.

First and foremost is a co-op multiplayer mode. They try to claim that it was a fundamental problem in their original design that prevented them from going down that path; however, a small, random group of developers were able to decompile the code and make many of the necessary changes on their own on a part-time basis. When you consider that along with the massive undertaking that it would be to develop the type of multiplayer experience that this game would need to implement in order to maintain cohesion of the underlying story on the Xbox platform, it begins to feel like Microsoft's offering was the true impedance. Doing so on the PC would have been a trivial matter compared to many of the other mechanics developed for this game.

Xbox Live is undeniably powerful. However; if your multiplayer experience does not fit tidily within a small set of scenarios, then you are forced to write a completely custom implementation that meets their very strict set of specifications against their very convoluted API. It is an incredibly onerous task that is prohibitive unless you are a behemoth like Bethesda or Square Enix.

When you look at the desire to develop VR support for this game, the decision becomes even more of a head-scratcher. It is literally the only modern gaming console that does not support VR in any way. Even the Switch can be rigged for it. Had they targeted a console that also supported VR, then I believe that it is a feature that would have received more attention. It certainly would have increased the percentage of the user base that wanted to play with that technology.

ssyfzgpkkf4r.jpg

Then there is the content that downright received a cut for no apparent reason. Many rumors have circulated (and some have been verified by the UW team) that some of those cuts were made simply because it wasn't going to be feasible for the Xbox release. Terraforming, anyone?

I just don't get it. It doesn't even seem economically justifiable considering that the Xbox is dead last in popularity in today's market and has played second fiddle to the PS4 its entire life. The Switch has nearly tripled the number of sales the Xbox One had in the first year after its release, and is second only to the PS4 in the same time frame. The one and only claim-to-fame that the Xbox has going for it is, multiplayer *sad trombone*... I just don't understand. If they'd truly gone cross-plat, then it would make more sense. If they'd gone with PS4 as the "third wheel" rather than the Xbox, then it would still make more sense. Heck - I'd even throw them a bone if they'd switched :D gears and gone with the Switch given the original mobile roots that this game spawned from. This just doesn't seem rational, at all...

TL:DR: Xbox sucks...

[BUG][VR] Spawned in the lower level after docking into the cyclops [59783 steam]

$

How to reproduce:
 1. play in VR mode (seated, in case it makes any difference)
 2. get a cyclops and a seamoth (prawn not tested)
 3. pilot the seamoth and dock it to the cyclops

Effect:
Once docking animation finishes, player gets spawned in the world, but not on top of the seamoth.
Out of 4 tries, I was spawned:
 • 3 times in the bottom half of the cyclops, with the cyclops rolling (in pitch/yaw/roll sense) more or less severely to the right
 • 1 time I got spawned outside of the cyclops, and the cyclops launched into the air. To give an idea about how "launched" it got: I was above the jellyshroom cave entrance closest to the aurora, on the border with kelp forest, and the cyclops landed on top of the aurora, between the engines, a overhanging a bit from the back of the aurora. Too bad I did not think to screenshot...

Entering the seamoth seated and standing up right before docking does not improve the result: viewpoint is higher above seat/ground both before and after docking, and I still got spawned in the lower cyclops level.

Where is XBox Version Now?

Hi.

I have been playing SN on pc for a couple of years now. Today I am taking delivery of an XBox One X. Whilst I know that SN has not been specificaily enhanced for the XB1X capabilities, can somebody tell me where the XBox version is with updates, compared to the PC version? Is the XB version behind or at the same update as PC?

Thank you.

Ghost Leviathan near starting lifepod.

I went to explore the Lost River, because I got materials for Mk3 depth module (seamoth) way before the story advanced there.

Met the Ghost Levithans for the first time. They scared the breath out of me.

When traveling back to my lifepod, I noticed that a Leviathan was following me, and it was being ultra aggressive.
Once I made it to the grassy plains right before Shallows, it started clipping terrain, and even disappearing in it.

It attacked my Cyclopse so viciously at the surface level (0 m) that it pushed it 50 or so meters above sea level.

I've since managed to bug it out and leave it clipping terrain, and it seems to patrol now 200-300 m from my lifepod, below the terrain level.

I can leave my Seamoth near the seafloor, and it will swim up and destroy it and proceed to swim back into the terrain below the wiorld.

Afaik Ghost Leviatans aren't common in Sandshark/Stalker terrain?:)

Subnautica Version: Jan-2018 59783

I am missing two achievements and after checking it I can see it is the following:

"Go Among the Stars" - Launch the Neptune rocket
"Leave Only Time Capsules" - Create and deploy a time capsule

These should be completed once you leave the planet but unfortunately they do not. I have tried a couple of times now but to no avail.

If any one has information on how to obtain them or can confirm my issues, please leave a note :)

Kind regards,

Crazy about hive score... why?

$

Why are some people so crazy obsessed with their hive score?

Just came from a server where we started a 3v3 seeding game... Suddenly one guy starts flipping out because his team had an afk for 10 seconds (literally the person he was trying to kick typed he was there in time to prevent the vote from passing.. then they got mad at the "toxic community" and left) then as more people are joining the guy suddenly starts raging again because it ended up 5v7, and he was saying that only happened because people were stacking due to hive score.

You can't even join a team if they are up a player! Like the thing he was complaining about isn't even possible. (at least not on that server)

He F4'd and raged in the ready room that entire game about how it was unfair, how people stack for hive score, and on and on. (and his team almost won - if only he hadn't raged...)

Then in the next game the other team ends up being down 2 players for over 10 minutes... He didn't make a peep. Was all too happy to play that game out silently.

I just don't get it. Why do people like this care about the score SO MUCH? I mean freaking out over a 10 second afk in a 3v3 seeding game?? That's taking it pretty far. Borderline insanity.

Stable version Jan-2018 59783. When reaching the Aurora Black Box you would get a signal for the Energy Pulse Origin. This isn't happening anymore. Only a PDA note about what happened. I've tried going to the island platform control room and again no signal for the Disease Research Facility. I get a PDA note but that's it. I'm not running experimental, I've tried reinstalling it, and starting a fresh game but still nothing. Have these signals been removed from the game?
