New game mechanic for survival: Fish Whisperer

$

So recently I made a post involving more violent solutions to violent fish. Controversial to say the least, but there were some ideas in the comments and it got me thinking about non-violent solutions to these creatures.

I present to you the idea of us as survivors being a...
FISH WHISPERER
AKA: Fish Behaviorist

Simply put: We learn about creature's behaviors, and find ways to get them to do things we want them to [IE: Big munchy things to leave us alone, small helpful things to help, ext.]. We already have something similar to this with stalkers and how we can get them to be temporarily passive with peepers (the snack that winks back).

This is my list of ideas and an example with them. I will say this might be far harder to code given the fact that you have to deal with different movements of the player for some of them, but I think a few of these might be pretty easy to do.

These ideas will be split into 3 categories: deterring predators, Pacifying Aggressiveness, and befriending Creatures.

Deterring Predators
Getting predators to run away

Sonic weapons: These weapons would include things like handheld "explosives", a torpedo, and maybe a sound gun. Basically it will screw with some creature's senses and cause them to flee. The first enemy that made me think of this was none other than the Reaper Leviathan and it's data entry. It relies on it's roar like a sonar, which means it likely has very acute hearing. Any sonic weapon will cause it to freak and run so long as it can hear the noise. be warned this would only work as long as the sound, wherever it would come from, is active, and once it stops the Leviathan returns. Any creatures that rely on sound would be instantly paralyzed or flee because of the noise. Creatures like the peeper... wouldn't even know what you're holding; nor would they care.
Tool/weapon ideas: Sonar bomb, blast torpedo, Frequency Cannon.

Mimicry: This will come up again in the other categories. Mimicry would involve some sort of cloaking device or something that would make you look like a different predatory fish. You'd have to scan fish to get the blueprints for the equipment to make you look like a fish, but it would basically cause lesser predators to flee (such as a biter running from you looking like a stalker). There would be 2 limitations. 1st: Size. You are not looking like a Sea Dragon any time soon, but your cyclops can. Specific sized creatures require specific vehicles or lack there-of. 2nd: Biome. a Sand shark lives at its lowest in the dunes and so a river prowler would never have likely met one, and so it would be aggressive to it, and vice versa.

Pacifying Aggressiveness
You become as interesting as a rock to a predator

Movements: This would be one of the harder coding for behaviors, but it could be a very fun and very interesting tool. Lets imagine 2 stalkers fighting for a piece of scrap. In this display of power they both start by circling one another, then one charges forwards. The one being charged at moves out of the way and moves to charge at the stalker. This repeats until one of them gives up (lets say 1-3 times). You can then emulate this behavior when meeting a stalker looking for a meal. As you swim with it and go back and forth it eventually gives up and becomes passive for a time (until it looks for another meal.) The big parts would be the potential creature interactions as we see predators fight for territory, food, scrap, ext between one another for that more immersive feeling, while also making it more fun to watch species for both entertainment, and genuine improvement of survival skills.
*side note: maybe you could also mimic other predator behaviors when facing lesser predators to get a similar result, except them fleeing (aka: movements for "Deterring predators")

offerings: We already have this with stalkers, so how about other creatures. Not much else to say.

Mimicry: This is just about the same with mimicry, except that creatures wouldn't flee, but just not care. A given would be predators of the same species (although you could have to use "movements" if something thinks you're encroaching on its territory). The only other big difference is that if you were in a cyclops hiding as a reaper, going into the blood kelp zone, the Ampeel wouldn't be keen on attacking, but wouldn't flee either. It doesn't know what it is, only that it is big so unless it shows aggression, there isn't necessarily a reason to flee to it.

Befriending Creatures
Symbiotic relationships for your hard work

Long term interaction: After being in contact with a creature for a while, it may gain a sense of alliance with you after constant "movement" interactions or "offerings", similar to temporarily passive stalkers, but this would be more permanent.

Saving a life: Say you find a reaper leviathan going after a lowly sand shark, and before the sand shark dies, you use your sonic gun and get the reaper to swim off. That sand shark would have a chance at becoming a friend. The same can be said if you find an injured creature, be it a reefback or a crabsnake and you do a "movement" interaction, then sacrifice a health pack or something to heal it. Another chance for it to ally with you.

Mimicry: Just like before, you watch interactions but this time you see how a pack hunter, say a bone shark, would get another bone shark to become an ally, then you do just that after you make it neutral with you.

*side note: Up to the devs if we'd ever get a reaper/sea dragon as a friend. (that would be soooo cool though)

Final Thoughts

These are just some ideas, and things like movement behavior can be pretty difficult to properly code between how the player moves with a level of forgiveness/strictness in that movement and the mistakes made in it, to how the fish itself interacts and how the player responds. It's all a bit of a pain, but if this game goes in a unique, non aggressive approach, I'd like it if even one or two of these things gets implemented because of how interesting it would be interacting. I understand where people come from not wanting weapons in the game, but something needs to happen because right now the only difference between a shooter and this is that you don't kill the things, you just run from them. For all the difference that makes, this isn't a horror game so it isn't AS noteworthy as it could be.

EDIT: I would also like to say that this game's aggressive enemies need to be toned down a bit. Seriously get within earshot of them and there is a 90% chance they're looking at your behind like there was a hamburger between your buns. Most non-apex predators (basically predators that aren't leviathans/emperors of the real world, and what should be this world) won't attack strange/unusual creatures unless provoked or starved. So unless there is a creature made that just so happens to look a lot like a human in a diving suit across every place there is a predator, we should be looked at with a bit more caution by these creatures unless they're described as being abhorrently vicious... or as I'd like it to be known: new genus of angry Sea Honey badger

Rock puncher?

The rock puncher is a concept created for Subnautica with the original intent of terraforming the land. When terraforming was removed, the rock puncher was put on the "chopping block." Fans who loved the design then came up with other solutions: the rock puncher, instead of punching rocks, could punch bases, mineral deposits, or other life forms. Do you think rock puncher should be added using an alternative solution?

Midgame fragments and monsters stop spawning.

This is a weird one and will try my best to explain what happens. At the beginning of the game monsters/loot/fragments spawn at a normal and somewhat predictable rate. Just being able to roam around and find fragments and monsters at a rate of 1fragment-per15min play time and monsters at random points.

However after getting a good number of the fragments and blue prints the fragments just stop spawning. I am normally lucky and somehow get all the fragments for the cyclops(I had two runs where I couldn't find more then 2 fragments of the 9 needed) and go hunting deeper and deeper for more fragments. But at some point there is a cutoff so no fragments spawn not even the geaglide fragments.

I just thought I wasn't looking in the right spots and that some changes were made to the game but after driving around in my cyclops and seamoth for almost 6 hours of play time with no fragments spawning or even monsters feels more like a glitch. The problem is persistent but resets when making a new game so the game spawns more fragments at the beginning then randomly stops midgame.

I have tried reinstalling the game 3 times and tried verifying the integrity of game cache with little noticeable differences.
Has anyone else experienced this type of bug before because I feel like it might be tied to my gpu or cpu but cant say for sure.

Woot!

EDIT: Also, silver. You know. That thing everyone is always complaining they can't find. Sort of ironic. xD
EDIT2: I think now I've got it. GabeN just thought he would be nice and give us more silver.

Special Hull Plate Contest

I have an extra hull plate that I bought when that was available and forgot about it for ages. You can read more info about this plate at the wiki. I believe the plate is #14, but I can't check it without redeeming the code. These numbered plates are not available any more so this is likely last chance to get one. All I am asking for is a reply in this thread with your favorite Subnautica story. They can be short, long, not even yours but you heard from a friend, stuff you saw on Youtube, etc. The winner will be picked randomly. You may post multiple times, but only one entry will count.

What you will win:
- 1 copy of Subnautica
- 1 numbered Hull Plate (probably around #14)
4lu1x2tgd1up.png

Replies up until 10pm MST on January 4, 2017 will be in the draw.

You can redeem just the Hull Plate if you already own the game. I don't believe the game can be re-gifted unfortunately.

Once a winner has been picked, I will contact them with the needed information. Redemption will take a while as it requires a lot of hands on work from the team.

Congrats to the dev team for Subnautica's success in 2016!

Placing Silver in Steam's top 100 list for 2016 is no small achievement for a small dev team like this. You are listed among many AAA titles there, and for good reason! As an early backer for NS2 back in 2011, I am thrilled to see now where you have put your time and resources since then.

Subnautica is something special and I wish all of you the best of luck getting through the sleepless nights yet to come in 2017 while finishing your wonderful game! I look forward to seeing Subnautica in its final form and exploring all the wonders yet to be implemented. It is truly a special game.

Kudos Unknown Worlds!

Please move the thread in its not for general. This is more of a note for server owner.

Have been banned from 8-bit server. No drama or whatsoever, a troll was using my name and.. well trolling people. A known UK accented guy, hes been around for a long time under various names.

Anyway, have been slapped with ban in his place. Or so I hope.

Rocks keep forming inside my base

If I place a corridor or a room it moves any rock blocking it out the way. That is probably because the terraformer isn't in Xbox one. However, about 10 mins later I go inside my base and it is filled with rock So then i have to remove the corridors and rooms then replace them. This is really annoying and if it is happening to anyone else please let me know so I can be sure it's not just my game glitcing out.

[CRASH] Random Crashes while exploring [42313]

Keep getting random crashes while exploring, have not found a consistent pattern, though it is usually around a lag spike from exploring (kelp forest biome normally). Had 4 so far.

Started today (though only had the game for about a week now), no hardware changes, no software changes, last windows update was 2 weeks ago according to windows 10.

After the first two crashes I installed the latest graphics driver (was running 376.19, updated to 376.33), after the 3rd crash I rebooted, after the 4th crash I released a string of expletives (technically that happened after the first crash too and I learned this game does not have any autosaves).

[BUG] Objects Render Through Walls While in Cyclops (Build 24313)

While in the cyclops, objects appear to render through base walls, and on top of some objects and scenery. They appear to be loaded into memory and render at any distance.

Here are screenshots.

Based on the fact that this only takes place in the cyclops, and that it's also viewable from the cameras, it likely has something to do with the player's position within the cyclops.

I know this is early access game but I just purchased this yesterday for my xbox (brother has it on pc and it runs great) but nothing loads in for me. I'll be looking for limestone/sandstone and it won't load in unless I stop at every rock wall and wait for it to load. I have looked up various ways to free up RAM and have done so. What I don't understand is how I can watch a streamer on Xbox One playing this game FLAWLESSLY but I'd rather watch paint dry then play it on my Xbox. Are there any tips to get this game to run a little better on the Xbox one!?

[Bug] PDA Hard to See [42670]

I'm on the latest experimental version 42670.

Docking or Undocking from the Moonpool with either the PRAWN or Seamoth gives us a glitch with the PDA:

Notice how the PDA is more dull and harder to see (especially when your back is facing the sun). The Sea Top (or whatever it is) basically "erases" the PDA that the player can interact with. Beacons that display on the HUD also come up first, making whatever it is on hard to see.

Docking or Undocking from the Moonpool with either the Seamoth or PRAWN will cause this glitch to happen.

Hope you guys fix it!

Borealis Rising - A Subnautica Story, V2.0.
By: Bugzapper (Lee Perkins).

CHAPTER ONE

Unlike a certain Mr. Samuel L. Clemens, the reports of my death are entirely accurate.

Alexander Fergus Selkirk lived to the ripe old age of 115 years, and died three times in the process. We're not talking about any 'dying on the operating table'- type deaths, either. The first time, I blundered into the path of a hungry Stalker and paid the price for my singular lack of caution. All things considered, I got off extremely lightly. Having a working Valkyrie Field in the Lifepod gave me a second chance, and I dare say that I learned a valuable lesson from that experience.

Considering that this planet is essentially a heaving mass of aquatic life forms with a marked taste for human flesh, it would serve you well to keep your wits about you. If you've accessed my earlier log entries, you'll probably be aware of the most prevalent threats that planet 4546B (a.k.a 'Alpha Hydrae IV' or 'Manannán') has to offer. I have done my best to provide a broad assessment of each alien species encountered so far, including their general appearance, typical behaviour patterns and perceived threat levels. Please be advised that this information is by no means complete and highly subject to revision, since this planet has entered a state of accelerated evolution. It is entirely possible that new life forms are appearing even as this account is being written.

Yes, you did read that last sentence correctly.

My second death was a rather more unpleasant surprise. Approximately eight months after Aurora crashed on this planet, a Torgaljin Corporation commercial frigate arrived and commenced highly secretive operations near one of my undersea bases. Since I had already launched a deep-space distress beacon by that time and the frigate De Ruyter had made no obvious attempts to contact me, I became immediately suspicious of their intentions. A few days later, a Torgaljin security team entered my base and I was murdered by their leader, Invigilator Galen Tomar. After being restored to life by the Valkyrie Field, I commenced a retaliatory action that culminated in the destruction of De Ruyter and the loss of its crew. This particular outcome was not at all intentional, although the follow-up operation against Torgaljin Corp's base in the Lava Castle was entirely successful and no further human lives were lost during our assault on this facility.

As for what happened to the inhabitants of the Torgaljin base in the aftermath of that raid, I can only speculate how events might have unfolded. As the Lava Castle base has been effectively isolated for the past hundred and two years, I am understandably reluctant to carry out a detailed reconnaissance mission in order to ascertain whether anyone is still alive down there. Camera drones have been sent there on several occasions, although they were deliberately made to be unable to operate the base's airlock controls. My greatest concern is that Torgaljin personnel might capture a more sophisticated drone and begin reverse-engineering its more accessible components. Considering that I took particular care in completely shutting down Torgaljin's illegal operations on this planet, I had no intention of handing over what amounted to an instant technological advantage. They were slapped down hard, and I want those bastards to stay slapped down.
Permanently.
