Contribute to UWE's new secret project!

Greetings!

As some of you may know, UWE is working hard on their next project.
No, this is not the beautiful and mysterious Subnautica, but rather a new secret project that is not yet ready to be publicly revealed.

Why am I telling you this? Because we need your help!

Currently, things are still very much in the early stages of development and we need volunteers who are willing to thoroughly test and stress the foundations of this project to make it a solid product. We also need people who can give useful feedback and feature suggestions, (that the developers are starving for) and that can work well with a team of individuals who are detail oriented. This is a chance for you - the average gamer and tinkerer - to have a large and positive impact on the future of UWE's product by helping shape it early on in its life. Help make the game you'd want to play! Hopefully this is enough to encourage you to participate without needing to tell you exactly what the project is ahead of time.. ;)

The qualifications needed aren't much, but we only need 6-8 individuals, so we'll be picking the users who are the most enthusiastic and self motivated.
Don't be disappointed if you don't make it in this round of recruiting, there will be more down the road and you will eventually see more of this project no matter what.

Here's what we are looking for:
  • An hour of your time on Fridays 1500 PST / 2300 GMT
  • Volunteers who can reliably contribute to the project on their own time throughout the week, by providing UI and editor related feedback as well as detailed bug reports.
  • Contributors with fun and unique ideas that are willing to work on or at the very least test their ideas in UWE's latest engine, Spark 2.0
  • Someone who can get along with a team of other varying individuals.

If you feel this describes yourself and are interested, please fill out our application form!
If you don't get a response in the next two weeks (November 4th) then this means you were not selected. But fear not, we'll hold onto your application and may contact you in the future.

I hope to see you on the team!

*Warning Long post*

Ok as little as we know about Subnautica story and lore at the moment I am going to start pocking holes in it. Mind you many of these “holes” would be pretty much irrelevant, many not holes at all but lack of information, many can easily be patched up, many are only "holes" because this is pre-alpha and consistent story isn't a consideration at the moment. I just think it’s important to ask writers those questions so that we don’t have too many “Wizard did it” answers later on.

So let’s recap:
  • In not so distant future Earth is colonizing distant planets.
  • Before true colony ships and colonists arrive Earth sends survey vessels. Aurora is one such vessel.
  • On approach (or atmospheric entry) to currently unnamed planet (or is Subnautica the name of the planet) Aurora is struck by an unexplained energy pulse, suffers catastrophic hull failure and crashes.
  • A single life pod with one crew member on board survives.

Ok now questions:

Where are you going with this mysterious pulse?

We all know how the story goes in cliché sci-fi – there is a hostile force, something that doesn’t want humans there… perhaps an alien device that player will have to find and master before Earth colony ship can land. Alternatively and a bit less cliché the pulse might be the result of natural phenomena which player will still have to study and master or at least find a way to counter. Is this necessary though? Hostile alien force seems to be against the stated spirit of the game, and neutral force like natural phenomena doesn’t seem to add anything to gameplay or story?

Also would the Earth even send the Colony ship? I mean if it doesn’t get “All Clear” from Aurora – would Earth really sends thousands colonists on potentially deadly mission? And if it does hear from Aurora – would it send the ship? Hey we got this thing that shoots spaceships out of the skies – so come on over send the colony ship.

Why is Aurora so large?

Ok granted massive Aurora looks badass, but why does exactly would Earth waste resources on a massive ship presumably filled with supplies, equipment and personnel when apparently a single person in lifepod equipped with fabricator can - not only conduct planetary survey but jump start the colonization? Why isn’t Aurora just a lifepod equipped with a cryo chamber and a fabricator and strapped on a rocket?

Are we going for one-person-colonization-effort?

Once again Aurora is huge, I assume that means someone on Earth believed it has to be. Believed that survey and initial colonization/terraforming requires considerable resources, qualified personnel and more. Are we going to prove them wrong and show everyone that one person can establish the outpost, conduct comprehensive survey and jump start terraforming effort?

Is there something wrong witch character's priorities?

Anyone else thinks strange that after tragic destruction of the Aurora character isn’t thinking – “I have to look for other survivors” or say “I have to get the warning and SOS/Mayday to Earth” or say “I have to get to Aurora see if I can recover some of the equipment and supplies” or even “oh my god, all my friends are dead”? Instead the characters cheerfully dives in to explore the ocean as if they were on snorkel tour on Hawaii.

Why is there only one life-pod? Why only one person inside of it?

Seriously if Aurora had a crew of only dozen and say only 2 life-pods (seems unlikely for the size of the ship) and then you get only 1 survivor – I’d be seriously considering possibility that survivor sabotaged the ship or that she/he at least selfishly abandoned her/his mates

***

P.S. What would work personally for me is either:

a) Smaller Aurora. Essentially one-man “deep search” exploration vessel designed for a specific purpose of allowing a single Star Scout find and survey planets for potential colonization. In this case Aurora doesn’t even need to crash land, it just have to be slightly bigger version of the Lifepod that our scout/character landed on the waterworld. Also I should point out that such Lone Wolf Scouts and First-in missions are time honored tradition of science fiction.
b) Actual survey expedition. Team, other survivors, NPCs… they don’t need to be anything more than plot features and few dialog lines in say base interface, they can even be added without having actual 3D models in the gameworld… but they have to be there. Also there have to missions to Aurora crash, something that explains why the ship was necessary in the first place.
Perhaps we can make the first mission of the to respond to a distress signal from another lifepod, rescue expedition medic, which will now be a part of the expedition team and can provide a number of new crafting schematics as well as conduct biomedical research on the samples we bring to the base. And perhaps the second mission would be to get to Aurora and lunch space probe which will transmit Mayday to Earth with the secondary objective of accessing ships database to extract additional crafting schematics.

Hi, I purchased 4 versions of this game for my Sons burthday, to play NS2 with my Son and some family members.
This was done at 14.9 and until now my son can not start the game due to the error above.
We wrote to the steam service twice - no response until today!!!!!

He reinstalled, cleared cache which causes that all steam games were lost, reload but now way the game does not start.
My son is using win7 like we all and he has an Athlon 3 core.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

Is the SeaMoth a Scooter Only?

Hi.

This isn't a gripe but something in the game is bothering me, and that is the view the player has while using the Seamoth. I know it's a cool little sub, looks good, and is swift but not all that suited for underwater exploration.

Here is something I was looking at earlier....

cyclops-white-front.jpg

manatee-electric-marin-vehicle-644x588.jpg

Also I was thinking that having the main seating area of the Seamoth be more inside a glass dome which would be attached to the main body. In essence you would be sitting in a round bowl overlooking everything with no view restrictions.

If this not going to change (view) then could I suggest that some radar or measurement tool be used to let us know when we are too close to the bottom? I can't number how many times I rammed the bottom (didn't die but did die when a leaf of kelp smacked into the hull).

Anyway, just thinking...

Hi.

I was asked on Steam by one person why I didn't make a video of my exploration of the Blue Coral Reef, and it was pretty simple really... I'm lazy, but I was asked by one more person (whole gaggle of people there huh?) so I decided to take my diaper off, and get the video made... so here it is.

Has anybody heard it at all? How does it sound like? I see
Reinforced taunt “Kill em’ all, it’s the only way to be sure” is now much more likely to play.
in the 267 build changelog, it also was in 263:
Increased weight of exclusive Female Marine Shadow badge taunt from 3% to 8%
I've never heard it even once. Asked other players, they didn't even know that it exists. Is it only me? Or is it a Linux version bug?

Mouse advice - Logitech G400s

$

Hello, I apologize on intruding here, since I am not a competitive player, but I thought some of you might provide an expert advice on gaming mice.

I am a long time happy user of MX518, but since started playing NS2 a lot, I noticed that the mouse moves wierdly sometimes, like someone is "correcting" my aim. Googling a bit, I have learned it's that dreadful angle snapping feature, and since in case of mx518 it's in the firmware of the mouse, it cannot be switched off.

In an attempt to upgrade, I bought the G400s as an obvious upgrade (same shape which I like a lot), and I have mixed feelings about it after unboxing. Great aim, it seems tighter than mx518 after setting polling to 1000Hz (though it might be placebo), weight is okay, but the problem is the middle button, it's a bit too resistant, tough to press, and the wheel has a kind of cheap feel to it, the click of the wheel being somewhat mushy and not discrete.

On the other hand, I have read that the mouse have an advantage of being optical, that laser mouses have lower sensitivity, G500 has input lag and so on... so, what is your advice?

Should I keep it (I can still return it free of charge), or is there a better option in the same price range?

Thank you for any advice on the matter.

Physics doesn't matter ?

Hi,

I was really surprised that the game shows us that it uses the powerful PhysX from nVidia, and seeing that when you jump as a Kharaa or a Marines, you can change your direction when in the air.
I've tried to reproduce that IRL, always failed. Should it be considered as a bug ? Or a gameplay mechanics ?

ns2_hydra released (previously cradle)

ns2_hydra has finally been released, this map was previously called cradle and has so far taken 1 year to make.

A few important things you should all know first.

1. the map is not finished, theres still work to do on a few areas.
2. the ready room is placeholder until the actual ready room is finished, so please no complaints about the ready room i know it sucks but it works.
3. the current start locations are not final, the map was designed with fixed start points in mind, however for release marines may start in both subnautics and hydro lift, the aliens may start in test chamber and energy core. originally the map was designed for hydro and test chamber start.
4. the map has not been tested in a multiplayer environment and so expect it to be abit rough but i will fix issues.
5. the skybox isnt finished

Hull Plates in Steam Inventories... When?

UPDATE (11 Nov 2014)

This issue should now be resolved. If you still cannot see your Hull Plate in your Steam Inventory, please ensure you filled out the Steam ID form on your Humble Download page. If you are sure you completed the form and cannot see your Hull Plate, feel free to make threads/post, and we will assist you.

ORIGINAL POST (31 Oct 2014)

Hi guys, oh boy! First I had to tell you Steam keys were a little delayed... Now... One of the members of our team has had to take time off today for an unexpected personal matter. Because they are the one in charge of Hull Plates appearing in Steam Inventories, those plates are going to be delayed.

We're not sure how it will take, but the personal well being of our team must come first so we are not going to rush it. We don't expect it will be very long and certainly won't be more than a few days.

We're very sorry about the Hull Plate delay and will keep you up to date in this thread with progress!

I wanna know what you think has been the best and most enjoyable, or most exciting and entertaining competitive match that has been streamed live or recorded for NS2 in the past couple years.

It can be from any league, NSL or AusNS2. It can be from any caster, and it would be much appreciated if you included a link to the round!
