Not sure if this is the right subforum for this, but I noticed a wee spelling mistake:

It says "sinatlled" instead of "installed".

VR main issues

I’m loving the game, but there are some issues that make it inaccessible to players unwilling to tinker. Here is what I’ve come across.

1. Cannot read help text at bottom of screen - it’s just outside the perimeter of vision.
2. Changing cameras/views in Cyclops offsets the center of viewing by about 30 degrees to the left. Constant recentering required.
3. Gaze-based viewing only viable interface for driving Cyclops. Even still, the pointer is slightly off-center on side buttons (specifically the speed settings, camera selector, and decoy button — the engine on/off and silent running buttons get a mouse-over pop-up indicator that would be very helpful for other buttons too). As is, it’s impossible to tell if the pointer is hovering over a button on the hud. Random selecting trial and error is especially not fun when being chased by a leviathan.
4. Renaming a beacon is impossible in gaze-based viewing. In default, it works, but player must hold down a button on the Xbox controller while typing on keyboard. This is very difficult to execute while wearing a VR headset. Then, to drive Cyclops, you will need to change back to gaze-based interface.
5. Tablet too close and text too grainy. Increase font size and move the tablet further away from player. Reading PDAs very unpleasant.
6. Sometimes Prawn suit slips through cracks in ocean floor and plummets until pressure kills you.
7. Docking the Prawn suit or Seamoth into Cyclops causes player to eject and the Cyclops/docked-vehicle set to fly high into the sky above sea level and travel approximately 500-800 meters in a starboard direction. It will then float about 10 meters above water until the player approaches it and is within about 20 meters. Then it will fall into the ocean and you can board. Cause may be linked to the fact that the exit hatch on the prawn suit or seamoth is not lining up with the corresponding hatch in the Cyclops docking station? If timed just right, the player can exit the Prawn suit or Seammoth after the Cyclops grabs it but before it is docked, and avoid having to chase the vehicles 500 meters. But, you have to time it just right.
8. Occasionally a stalker will spawn inside base near starting location. Can block hallways.

Subnautica Below Zero Announced (SPOILERS)

Subnautica Below Zero will be a short sequel to the original game, more information here:

https://unknownworlds.com/subnautica/subnautica-below-zero/

This would be amazing to participate in the Early Access.

Trello:

https://trello.com/b/TQdBAYiP/subnautica-below-zero

I did not look through every note, but these are things I think are interesting:

This takes place after the events of Subnautica. The player will be a female, and they will apparently start out in a drop zone. There will also be various supply drops, most likely needed to establish a base. There will also bme more alien facilities.

It appears there will be additional base maintenance, and your base can be destroyed, and certain terrain features can also be broken. There will also be severe snowstorms that the player can seek refuge from in caves. There will also be something called a Spike Trap.

Several creatures will make a return, but there will also be several new creatures, such as Penguins and Rock Punchers.

Temperature will be the primary factor in survival, but there will be hot springs, and plants that provide heat.

Twisty Bridges and Lillypad Islands will be 2 new biomes in the upcoming chapter.

Hoverbike will be a new vehicle as a surface-only vehicle, heavily dependent on a Hoverpad to recharge. The bike will use up power, but will have an automatic shut off when the player is a certain distance away.

PRAWN Suit is removed as a vehicle, but a new vehicle will be added called a SeaTruck, which appears to have similar functionality of the PRAWN. The SeaTruck will also have some sort of fishing capability.

Lastly: Teleporter Room???

While playing Subnautica and exploring the hidden island, I accidentally parked my Seamoth too close to the island and now it's stuck on land, I tried to get it unstuck, but then my Seamoth just vanished and I can't get it back. I think that a bug might have caused this. Please help.

Subnautica Steam, Console & Expansion Update

$

Hey all.

We've been pretty quiet for a while, because we've all got our heads-down working hard. It's an exciting but busy time, and I just wanted to give you a quick update on what we're doing.

Subnautica:
We've been working on the Unity 2018 engine upgrade for Subnautica for a while now. It's not been easy. A lots of issues came with upgrading the engine which needed to be fixed, including bugs and visual glitches throughout the game. Finally, we think we've just about got it all done. So very soon we'll be putting this upgrade into the Steam Experimental branch for much more testing. We'll need all the feedback we can get to make sure we didn't miss any issues before it goes out to the general public. You can opt-in to the Experimental Branch on steam by following this guide: http://subnautica.wikia.com/wiki/Experimental_Mode

While we've been working on the engine upgrade, Panic Button (Doom on Switch port guys) have been working furiously on optimizations and the console versions of Subnautica. Because our code-base for Subnautica is exactly the same across all platforms, a large amount of their optimizations for making consoles run better will make their way into the PC/Mac version too. Lower-end machines *should* see the most benefit from their work, with things generally being a bit more stable in terms of frame-rate & stability. You'll also get better controller support for Xbox & PS4 controllers.

Their work done so far (with more coming) is ready to go into the Steam Experimental beta, so we'll be merging their work first, then our Engine upgrade in the coming week or so. Look out for CS#60529 & above (in-game F1 menu and top right).
We would LOVE to hear people's thoughts after trying it, and would love it even more if people could let us know how performance is for you against the older version. All critical comments are welcome.

Once Steam Experimental users have verified things are good with both Panic Button & our Engine upgrade, we're going to put out an Xbox Preview patch so Xbox users can start giving their feedback as well. We want the game to run as well as it can on all platforms so everyone can enjoy their gaming experience.

We've also been doing some small quality-of-life fixes that have been requested for far too long.

Done: Improving Subtitle Speed for non-English users; adding a Subtitle Speed slider for those who need to adjust the text speed: https://i.imgur.com/fRzOgsl.png
In-Progress: VR PDA distance slider - We've found that personal IPD plays a significant role in how 'close' the PDA feels in VR, and while it was fine for some people, for a lot of players it was far too close. Now we're working on a way to let you set the distance yourself in the options menu. We're not sure when this will be done, but we're trying to get it done ASAP. https://i.imgur.com/nCsVKmt.png
In-Progress: VR Seamoth Docking Fix - We're investigating the docking in Cyclops issue that's been a problem for a while.

Subnautica Expansion:
Most of the UnknownWorlds team are working on the Subnautica Expansion project. What started life as a DLC for the original game, turned into an Expansion and now, it's own stand-alone adventure. The team is very excited about the path we're taking & story we're' going to tell...breathing more life into the world of Subnautica on 4546B. We'll be announcing more about this project very soon.

We're acutely aware that a huge part of Subnautica's success is due to you our community. The forum posters, Steam commentators, Redditors, Youtubers, Twitch Streamers, Bug Reporters, Tweeters, Facebookers....all of you. So we'll be opening up development on the next Subnautica Chapter's Trello boards very soon. Some of us will also live-stream what we're working on.

Thanks for being with us, we hope you'll join us as we make a new Subnautica adventure on 4546B.

Hey guys!

Subnautica is currently in Early Access and as such you may from time to time encounter bugs and in the worst case, crashes. If you have issues with stability of Subnautica, please post your issues with as much detail as possible (video/screenshots/descriptions), followed by the following requested information:

Example Topic Title:
[Crash] Open my Locker and Crash! [Version Number]

1) Please run dxdiag.exe (search windows for it) on your systems and hit the button 'save all information' in the bottom right. Save this file for later.

LHmLsSd.png

2) Navigate to your Subnautica Folder in Steam (should be steamapps\common\Subnautica)

3) Open the Subnautica_Data folder and grab a copy of 'output_log.txt'

PJAwuF0.png

4) Upload all the text of these to something like http://pastebin.com/ and post the public links to them with your forum posts.

These 2 files will GREATLY help us in tracking down issues with Subnautica. Thanks!

Edit by Jonas:
We've also got a very similar guide with pictures for each step on Steam.
And as in every good tech support:
  • Please make sure that your Windows is up to date.
  • Please make sure that your drivers are up to date.
  • Please make sure your PC meets the minimum system requirements.
  • Please close all other applications before starting the game.
  • Have you tried turning it off and on again? ;)

I don't think I have to waste your time explaining what this is. I write shaders and make assets, here's a bunch of it.

If you have any questions or need help, feel free to message me on discord! My discord tag is RuneStorm#6948
More stuff will be added in replies to this topic, make sure to scroll down for additional stuff!
You can freely use these assets in any way you want, you may also modify them. You don't even have to credit me, it's nice if you do, but it's not required.

This surface_shader allows the use of flowmaps in NS2, useful for the organic/natural flow of rivers or other fluids, can be used in a lot of ways to create turbulence and movement without having to rely on simple panning textures.
The current version only supports a simple albedo but I plan on creating several version of this that support the full feature set, including water distortions.

Note: Please use the texture scale tool to scale the material up, ideally it should be as large as the entire surface so that the flowmap matches the entire surface, this makes editing much easier.

Installation instructions: Place the contents of flowmapper_v1.zip in your mods source folder (Open launchpad, select your mod and then click on source, place it there)

Parameter explanation

  • FlowmapNoise = "materials\RS\VFX\t_lowresnoise.dds" No need to change this as it is used for increasing the quality of the blend
  • SurfaceTexture = "materials\RS\VFX\t_surfacewater.dds" Change this to whatever texture you want distorted
  • FlowmapTexture = "materials\RS\VFX\t_flowmapexample.dds" This texture defines in what direction the SurfaceTexture should be pushed, if you don't know how to make one of these, google search for "Flowmap painter" you should find software that can assist you in the creation of flowmaps
  • FlowSpeed = .25 How fast the distortion moves, higher values = more speedy
  • SurfaceScale = .25 This value actually defines how large the visible texture itself is, since the flowmap needs to be scaled to match the total surface size this prevents any headaches with tiny or massively scaled textures

BoilingColdChick-size_restricted.gif

Let's be honest here, the default lava that NS2 ships with isn't that great, and since when is lava transparent? Artistic choice or not, it looks like radioactive orange juice.
I decided to write a new shader from scratch using the same textures that were used by the default lava.
This version is much more versatile and customizable while still being as lightweight as possible.

Installation instructions: Place the contents of properlava_v1.zip in your mods source folder (Open launchpad, select your mod and then click on source, place it there)

Parameter explanation

  • LavaTexture = "materials/effects/mesh_effects/waterfall_tile_01.dds" what texture the lava should use, try to keep this a greyscale
  • NoiseTexture = "materials/effects/mesh_effects/fire_tile_01.dds" the noise texture is used to blend between different lava textures to reduce visible tiling
  • SurfaceTint = [1,.1,0] a decimal RGB color that is used for tinting of the lava texture, if you want blue lava, just change it to [0,0,1] you get the idea
  • SurfaceTintDark = [.1,.1,0] the base color the lava should have, this prevents pure black spots from appearing
  • GlowIntensity = 4 pretty self explanatory, lower values mean less glow
  • ScrollSpeedMultiplier = .5 How quick the lava should move, higher values mean more pompeii
  • WaveIntensity = 0.05 This defines how much the surface should bob up and down, to disable the bobbing entirely set this to 0

Alien Relics Collection (the truth is out there)

$

Initially I thought this was just a set up as freaky museum for the Devs to mess my mind with. Since then my instincts for paranoia have sharpened considerably, and I've taken to wearing a small but rather fetching tinfoil cap.

The truth is that the Alien Relics are a really an Alien's Field Research Kit (!!)

True Facts (read them on the Internet):
1. The Black Death that ravaged medieval Europe is thought to have originated in Central Asia (in and around Mongolia).
2. By 12th century Mongolian's had a very high resistance to this disease, as demonstrated by their casual handling of plague corpses (often catapulting them over the walls of recalcitrant European cities). Doubtless they acquired their resistance from thousands of yeas of co-evolution with the bacterium.
3. There's a theory called Panspermia. This holds that bacteria can often spread between planets and perhaps even between star systems. It also suggests that many Earth diseases may just be regional strains of widespread galactic bugs.

Conclusion:
If Kharaa was related to the Black Death then the Precursors would have had a very good reason to visit Earth and do a little bio-research.

The Kit:
- The bloody Mongolian sword: Just a research sample. This would have provided valuable DNA (and no messy probe required this time)
- The Organic Matter Particulator: Handy to sterilise planets when things really go pear-shaped (Note: keep out of reach of children)
- The Holographic Projector: For two way communications between field researchers and base labs.
- Tracking Implant: A standard field research item akin to the electronic tags we currently use to study wildlife.
- Translation Device. Just in case humans aren't just dumb animals after all.
- Ancient Yin-Yang motif. Hmm... so did they give this symbol to us then? If so, what else? Oh yeah a low virulent strain of a bacteria would be a good idea! Check back every thousand years of so and harvest whatever DNA we've evolved to deal it with. Earth is just another petri dish really. Nice one guys.

Must close - I can hear the black helicopters approaching.
