Heya!

If you're on the discord and are, like, the 1% of people who actually care about what I said, then you'll know I have been making a Subnautica map!

And I finished the version with no specific location on it!

Here you all go!

Why I find Subnautica unsatisfying in the long run (spoilers)

I'm dreading posting this, so I want to start by saying that I love this game. I burned myself out on it last summer and have only played in short bursts since, but this game sits in my heart as one of the greats (and it's not even in full release yet). I want to jump back into it as soon as I can and experience all of the changes that UW have made in those six months.

But there is one problem with this game that really bugs me. It may just be a personal thing so feel free to completely disagree, but I find the game very unsatisfying in the long run. It has some glaring issues regarding the expansion of this universe that will leave me wanting so much more after the game ends. Again, these issues may be personal, but I think it would be healthy to get these thoughts out there.

The game starts with you jumping into a life pod and ejecting out of the Aurora. The Aurora explodes, the life pod lands in the ocean and you are left on your own. As you look at the enormous ship on the horizon you may start to ask questions like Where did that ship come from? or Did I have any friends on that ship that I should be worried about? or How developed is humanity? Can they create ships as big as moons or is this ship the largest they can construct? And although you do find out that there were other people on the ship and you read their stories of the crash, you fail to discover whether your character knew them personally. You rarely even hear any mention of where they came from; you only hear about their lives during and after the crash. All you know about them is what they were like and what they did just before and during their time on 4546B.

When you journey to the Aurora you find it irradiated and burning. There are no corpses in sight; only broken technology and PDA diaries. This detracts from the emotional weight of the Aurora crash substantially. I know they were trying to keep an age rating, but this ship doesn't feel lived in at all. There is no sign of human life other than their scattered PDAs. The emotional impact of something is directly affected by your involvement with it; when all I have that links me to this crew is PDA entries it doesn't get me invested. Sure, it's sad that they died, but it doesn't bring with it any real emotional impact. The most emotional part of Subnautica is by far (and spoilers) the Emperor's death and the hatching of her young. You feel something when she dies, and this is because we met her, we interacted with her, we knew her motivations and her struggles and we helped her overcome them. If we were given text that just told us that the Emperor had died and her young had hatched the emotional weight would be nowhere near what it is now.

And this is a recurring theme in Subnautica and my problems with it; I feel a lot more invested with the planet than I have ever felt with Alterra or the Federation. I am constantly interacting with the planet and its creatures, I am constantly watching them interact with each other. I love this planet and everything on it because I've spent hundreds of hours exploring, seeing and interacting with these creatures and everything like that. I haven't seen the Federation or my crew mates in-game so I feel nothing for them.

And here's where it all falls apart for me. This is the main point of this post so I guess I'll just put it on its own line in bold with italics and all that:

What I feel as a player contradicts what my character feels. Our motivations don't align.

When it comes down to it, your character's motivation is to leave this planet and return to Federation space, but you never feel the urge to complete this task as you don't know what your character is going back to. Your main reason for playing this game is to explore and experience the world that you've found yourself on, whilst also building vehicles and bases to suit yourself. There's a real disconnect between the player and the character in this game and it bugs me. In, say, Portal, Chell's task is to escape Aperture Laboratories and maybe kill GLaDOS along the way. You as a player are playing the game to do puzzles and solve them, and you feel a connection with the character because there's sympathy there. You are programmed to hate GLaDOS and see her as an enemy like Chell does, and you want to reach and kill her in the same way as the character. You could even take a newer, simpler game like Enter the Gungeon. The characters you play in that game have a sole task: fight through the Gungeon and acquire the artifact at the end. You as a player have that same motivation because it lines up with your gameplay (that being shooting bad guys, becoming stronger and progressing through the levels).

This is Subnautica's biggest weak point for me; you and your character have very different motivations for doing what they do. The character would B-line for where the plot asks him to go so that he can escape the planet whereas the player wants to explore and get to know the world they're playing in. It doesn't line up and it detracts from the experience, as I'm constantly left asking myself: Why is my character exploring the Grand Reef and looking for titanium to build a base when he already has the necessary equipment to get the the Prison? In this case I either, begrudgingly, go to the prison as it's what my character would do, or I would continue what I wanted to do and still feel that disconnect.

To conclude this, I love Subnautica. I honestly can't get enough. The gameplay is great, the creatures are fantastic and the concept is innovative and fun. The development team is doing an amazing job at fleshing out this world and everything on it. The only problem is that me and my character both have staggeringly different motivations. I play to experience the world that is being presented to me and explore it and discover more about it, but my character wants to get off as soon as is possible, to return to a Federation I know nothing about. This may not be a big problem for many out there, but for me immersion is key. It's difficult to put my mind inside a character who wants completely different things to me.

But that's just my opinion. The disagree button's there if you don't really think I'm on the money.

Mod to add "live" mapping to Subnautica (v0.9)

I've created a mod that allows you to display a map in the Steam Overlay that can display various pieces of information.

Caveat 1: A lot of the game revolves around exploring, so using this map should be considered a spoilers.
Caveat 2: Should the devs ever decide to add some form of auto-map or other in-game map, I'll most likely retire this mod.

Motivation

I tend to get lost a lot in Subnautica. Exploring is great fun, but once I've found something, once I know where something is, I really want to be able to find it again. Beacons help a great deal, but for some things, like resources, when I don't have a beacon available or when I simply want to know which way to turn to get to a biome a map is invaluable.

If I were really trapped on 4546B I'd definitely be drawing a map, pinning it to wall in my cyclops, or drawing it in AlterraPaint on my PDA.

This mod is my personal answer to not having an in-game map. I'm making it available as I'm sure there must be at least one other person that would like an in-game (ish) map.

Capabilities

Update Feature List
  • Works in a web-browser (chrome), and hence in Steam Overlay.
  • Displays the current player position (icon, coords) and current biome
  • Displays all ping manager items on the map (beacons, signals, vessels)
  • Has multiple background layers (blank, biomes(default), lost river, etc).
  • Has a store of POIs, taken from the wiki, (off by default), for things like wrecks, degasi bases, vents etc. (very much spoilers, also probably out-of-date).
  • Displays a time of day indication. (v0.4)
  • Leviathan Spawn Locations map layer (v0.5)
  • Update wiki POIs (v0.5)
  • Can now switch layers automatically, e.g. for Lost River. (v0.6)
  • Support for Subnautica not in default Steam Library (0.7)
  • Improved Maps and more of them (0.8)
  • Displays player view direction (0.9)

There needs to be a serious QOL improvement in this game when it comes to crafting...

Anything in storage bins, lockers etc, needs to be able to be pulled from.

So when you go make something (ESPECIALLY with the builder) it should pull directly from your lockers. This game isn't realistic by any means of the imagination (creating things out of thin air). So this QOL improvement would go a LONG way.

I have been playing this game from SUPER early access, and honestly the most boring thing about this game is going back to your lockers or your base to get ingredients. Have it where it can be PULLED from the lockers.

I hope this gets MOD support because this is the first thing that needs to be done.

Where is XBox Version Now?

Hi.

I have been playing SN on pc for a couple of years now. Today I am taking delivery of an XBox One X. Whilst I know that SN has not been specificaily enhanced for the XB1X capabilities, can somebody tell me where the XBox version is with updates, compared to the PC version? Is the XB version behind or at the same update as PC?

Thank you.

Since Subnautica will have trailers for 1.0, Here's a song that fits well with the atmosphere

Short edit: all I did was cut 2 minutes, highly suggest you listen with headphones: https://instaud.io/10Z1

Original 5 minute long on his official youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE884dAaCH0

Nice and slow at first, maybe show early-stage gameplay for the first 2 mins, but the drop at 1:51 onwards would be perfect for showing the deeper, gorgeous, and terifying parts of Subnautica

If actually considering this, he has contact info here under Details: https://www.youtube.com/user/MrBillsTunes/about

I tried my hand at making a trailer with the song, but I'm shit at editing so didn't even finish it lmao https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWYkyPJvYAs

So what are your thoughts? What song would you have in the trailer?

Hey guys!

Subnautica is currently in Early Access and as such you may from time to time encounter bugs and in the worst case, crashes. If you have issues with stability of Subnautica, please post your issues with as much detail as possible (video/screenshots/descriptions), followed by the following requested information:

Example Topic Title:
[Crash] Open my Locker and Crash! [Version Number]

1) Please run dxdiag.exe (search windows for it) on your systems and hit the button 'save all information' in the bottom right. Save this file for later.

LHmLsSd.png

2) Navigate to your Subnautica Folder in Steam (should be steamapps\common\Subnautica)

3) Open the Subnautica_Data folder and grab a copy of 'output_log.txt'

PJAwuF0.png

4) Upload all the text of these to something like http://pastebin.com/ and post the public links to them with your forum posts.

These 2 files will GREATLY help us in tracking down issues with Subnautica. Thanks!

Edit by Jonas:
We've also got a very similar guide with pictures for each step on Steam.
And as in every good tech support:
  • Please make sure that your Windows is up to date.
  • Please make sure that your drivers are up to date.
  • Please make sure your PC meets the minimum system requirements.
  • Please close all other applications before starting the game.
  • Have you tried turning it off and on again? ;)

The Sunbeam not blowing up?

This has been on my mind for quite some time, ever since I first stood on the beach side and said to myself: "Wait... that's no tower..."
So, I understand that the array can currently be disabled. I've been meaning to test this theory out for myself, but I can't seem to get away from resource gathering for my base long enough to do so.

If you progress the game far enough to the Sunbeam arrival countdown but have the equipment necessary to make a bee-line to get the cure and disable the array in time before it's arrival would you get an ending, or what? Has anyone tried this before?

I've tried looking up this scenario before to find out what happens or if it is even possible.

We could use a 2nd entrance for the cyclops, here's my suggestion where

[and comp of what sexy Mi-8 doors look like](http://imgur.com/a/O3odd)

the idea came to me in a dream/nightmare lol also in my dream, the cyclops began to flood and a warper came in through the vehicle bay doors, swam up past the ladders to where the water was still flowing into the top half of my cyclops, and proceeded to claw and crawl it's way out of the water towards me [like an octopus](https://youtu.be/TFzpC_e44Tg?t=1m23s), but way faster

not even joking I was so goddamn scared

Going strait west in a cyclopes no cheats just 6 ion power cells a shield to see how far I would get before dying (just because). I looked at my radar and no one was chasing me. Open F1 and it says I'm in the crash zone about -2500 100. I fix the damage and keep going then it says I'm in mushroom forest -3000 280. Then I came here.

Grassy plateaus at -3500 280
Kelp Forest -4000 300
shallows -4050 300
more kelp at -4300 300
Wait is the biome map just repeating here?
No more mushroom at -5000 300 its not the map
All my markers are pretty much one dot now

Mission: Ariadne Arm Phasegate Installation, 3 year operation time
Crew: Command Team (23), Engineering Team (85), Support Crew (40), Passengers (9)

Facilities:
- Dark-matter ion drive V8
- Engineering section with A Grade facilities (incl manned robotics suite and full scanner range)
- 0.25 cubic kilometers storage for phasegate installation apparatus
- Habitation section with C+ Grade leisure facilities.

VR status

With the PC release of Subnautica imminent, what is the status of VR?

It appears work is continuing at a limited pace, but is still very rough around the edges. However, if it is not functional and immersive on day-one, this needs to be made clear on the Steam website. Doing an official VR release post-1.0 is a reasonable alternative.

P.S. With polish and controller support, Subnautica could become a must have for any VR player.

Welcome ladies and gentlemen... Lentlemen if you please... to the release of ns2_unearthed (aka ultimate ns2_trash version 2.0 competitive...delux...you'll get a black marine skin I promise...Nah you won't only kidding edition!)

So, if you're unfamiliar with ns2_trash, first of all SHAME ON YOU!, but also, you can find the original map here - https://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/145621/ns2-trash/p1

ns2_trash itself is a "nicely" balanced, if pretty bland/ugly map that I built (therefore am aloud to call it ugly as hell... you're not! :P)
I worked "long" and "hard" on creating said map and am very happy with the outcome, I wanted a little more, but I didn't want to ruin what I already had... soooo

DUN DADA DAAAAAHHHHH!

Here is ns2_unearthed, its ns2_trash... but not.
I'm rebuilding areas (yet again with the help of my beautiful assistant @Mephilles) based almost solely off of the feedback from @herakl3s and other high skill competitive players.

You can expect to see potential layout changes, detail changes, room changes and all in all... well... "changes" that hopefully make the map more balanced for 6 vs 6 play.

Workshop link - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1162834732 (mod id in the comments)

That's right Lentlemen, you buy one, you get one free, you sub to ns2_trash, you get ns2_unearthed absolutely free... whether you want it or not! (this temporary offer is now over!)

SO, COME ON DOWN AND Tell your server admins to set up their servers to run both trash and unearthed because if they don't... THEY'RE SCUM!!! (note: server admins that do not run this mod are not scum)

Please for the love of god, leave feedback and join the Spark Crafter Collective for Testing purposes every Sunday @21:00 CEST/CET.

Enjoy the map, and keep an eye out here for future updates!

MARINE JUMP broken since today's patch

$

Hello I am really sad because your patch broke the mechanic most dear to me in this game - marine movement.

The problem is as follows: your marine, since today's patch, now always makes sounds on the initial jump. You can be standing still or moving, crouched or standing up, you will always make noise on the INITIAL JUMP. Here I need to clarifiy, since a lot of people are having trouble understanding my concerns, there are 2 different sounds connected to jumping: the sound you make when you press space, right as you lift off; and the sound you make when you land on the ground. Those two are very different in terms of impact on the game and in their ways of reproducing them.

The way it used to be you could do a lot of SILENT jumps, moving around the map SILENTLY, for example speeding up movement in vents, jumping up props, and basically just getting places you'd otherwise not get to, faster than just crouching, and that silently. There is more to this than just the initial jumping mechanic, the way you land factors in a lot whether or not you make noise with a jump, but that is not something I want to write an article about right now.
I really just want to put this out there right now and see if the devs have anything to say to this, if this is an intentional or unintentional change and see if we can get some answers.

Because the way this is right now I can't play the game if yet another skill-mechanic is just SILENTLY taken out of the game by the devs, whether it was intentional or not.

The game was playing well at first, but things really went downhill after I got the prawn suit.
First, the databox that is supposed to have the blueprint for the prawn suit drill arm will not open.
Second, i launched the prawn suit from the cyclops and it seems the floor had not loaded in yet because I just kept falling. At around 3k meters the prawn suit finally ran out of health...lol
Third, another time after loading the prawn suit in cyclops I started to raise the cyclops and poof, I was falling from 2k meters in the sky (where the cyclops and prawn suit now were)
Naturally for issues 2 and 3 I just exited without saving and reloaded.
But with 2 small bases, the cyclops, prawn suit and seamoth the whole game was getting very lagy. I often had to wait as long as 10-15 seconds for the sea floor to load in.
Also, the blue semi-transparent angel like creatures sometimes turn into large black blocks.

I've started a new game in hopes that by progressing faster I can get further along without the game becoming unplayable.
