Open the map, click somewhere. Close map. Your waypoint appears on the HUD so you have a visual heading, in case you don't know all the maps and routes. It will be easier to find your way. Much like the ( ! ) function but only you see it.
Either click again to have it disappear or automatic when you reach it.
